Samuel entered the cigar importing business with his eldest brother, William H. Thomas (1816–1885), the firm being William H. Thomas & Brother, with offices located at 25 Beaver Street, New York. William, who had established himself a fine residence overlooking Second Avenue between Seventy-fifth and Seventy-sixth Streets, purchased a portion of the old farmlands belonging to Teunis G. Bergen in 1862. William Thomas was an avid yachtsman, known to most as “Commodore Thomas,” captain of the Thomas family yacht, the Yacht Rambler.
